October 28, 2014— At Padre Faura’s side of the University of the Philippines Manila’s Campus, barren concrete walls and well-worn walkways are no more as the UP Manila Welcome Center was formally inaugurated. Lush greenery, ambient lights to guide the pedestrians at night, and a newly paved sidewalk now takes the place of the old and worn out Faura Entrance. This undertaking is only the beginning of the planned PHI way, a fully covered passage connecting Pedro Gil and Padre Faura entrances which also had its soft opening on the same day.
The construction of the Welcome Center was made possible through the efforts of Brod Manuel Bautista Agulto, M.D. Φ1969A, incumbent UP Manila Chancellor. The opening event kicked off with a formal inauguration of the Welcome Center; a solemn blessing and the soft opening of the PHI way followed. To cap off the monumental affair, a celebratory dinner was held at the new UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas, a project also completed under Brod Manny’s term.
The event was also made possible through Sis Charlotte Martinez Chiong, M.D. Φ1981A, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development; together with members of the Phi Kappa Mu International and the Phi Kappa Mu Alumni Association.
