As they say, Christmas is a season of giving. Many of us spend this time preparing for the usual parties and celebrations with our friends and family. However, many of our countrymen are unable to enjoy the season in their homes and in the company of their families and friends.

In keeping with the season’s spirit of fun and generosity, the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and Phi Lambda Delta Sorority of the UP College of Medicine carried on the traditional event annually held at the Philippine General Hospital Atrium to bring Christmas cheer to the patients and their relatives who will be spending their holidays in the wards of PGH.

This year’s event, Only the Phinest: Sangkaterbang Sorpresa, Sangkaterbang Ligaya was started off with a bang. Hosts Van Euldem Diaz Battad Φ2013, John Vincent Usita Magalong Φ2013, Sis Giselle Cerrillo Φ2013, and Sis Gellie Maglasang Φ2013 entered the stage with a dance spiel that brought smiles and laughter to the patients and their watchers in attendance. After a brief introduction, they immediately raffled off the first few prizes to lucky members of the audience.

At the beginning of the program, the hosts asked for volunteers from the audience to showcase their talents in exchange for the chance to win any of various prizes. Several of the most energetic people in the crowd took up the challenge and engaged in a dance-off to the song Gimme Gimme. The raffle prizes ranged from food items and Noche Buena packages to handy stand fans.

Still settling down from the previous segment, the audience surprisingly welcomed the first of the show’s guest stars, Kapamilya Star Cherry Pie Picache, arrived. This year’s event featured well-loved personalities such as Ramon Bautista, Grechen Ho, Bettina Carlos, and Thomas Torres. Each of them was featured in games and activities which allowed them to showcase their hosting skills and interact with the crowd, much to the watchers’ liking. Some of the most memorable moments were Cherry Pie Picache poking fun at the listed choices in the Pera o Bayong game, Ramon Bautista using cheesy pick-up lines on his co-hosts, and the cameo appearances of last year’s hosts Jose Nicolo Domingo Antonio Φ2012 and Angelo Maria Mendoza Salonga Φ2012.

As the program neared its end, the Neurosurgery band headed by Brod Gerardo Dizon  Legaspi Φ1983 and also featuring Brod John David Blanco Mata Φ2004B made an appearance, playing hits such as “Sunday Morning” and proving once again that the doctors of PGH are also multi-talented individuals. This was preceded by a brief description of Only The Phinest’s history and how it has successfully lightened the load of the patients of the hospital.

To cap off a fun and entertaining night, gift packages were distributed to all the members of the audience, fulfilling an earlier statement made by one the hosts. True enough, “Walang uuwing talo. Lahat panalo!” In the years to come, the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority will continue holding this event in order to ensure that only the finest is given to the patients of PGH during the most awaited season of Christmas.

On the evening of November 18, 2013, a large crowd gathered at the Bellagio Square in Ermita, Manila as the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority proudly introduced their newest members to the UP Manila community in a night also featuring the musical talents of the Itchyworms, Taken By Cars, the Phi Band, the A-Band, the Epimers, Autosave, and the Phi brods and sisses themselves. “One Big Phi 2013: Yield! Give in to the Beat” was truly one night for the books.

Livening up the evening were the witty commentary and timely jokes of Brods Julian Que Arguilla Φ2013 and Van Euldem Diaz Battad Φ2013 and Sisses Natasha Abela Φ2013 and Vea Santos Φ2013.

The A-Band of UPCM Class 2018 opened the evening with A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton. The Epimers of UPCM Class 2016 soon followed, taking everyone on a musical trip with songs such as Overdrive by the Eraserheads. Autosave, a band composed of members of the UP Musician’s Organization, then treated people to an original composition. Happy Hector, a band featuring brod Ryan Julius Angeles Bañez Φ2002 on bass, swept the crowd off its feet with songs like Mariposa.

Not to be outdone, the resident body of both the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority took to the floor to present breathtaking performances, with the LU4 brods and sisses, who affectionately call themselves Starex, taking the lead with the first dance. Next up were ICC brods and sisses, led by Kevin Ivan Penaverde Chan Φ2011 entertained everyone present; electrifying the audience with their moves. The PHIs from the Clerks’ class came soon after, captivating everyone present.  The PHI Interns present then took to the floor proving that aside from excellence in their hospital duties, they also can dance and have fun.

The PHI Band also showed its mettle as its numerous members rotated every few songs, ensuring a widened diversity of styles. This year’s line-up of the PHI Band introduced four new brods and two new sisses to the group in Lorenzo Abednego Bobadilla Adre Φ2013, Van Euldem Diaz Battad Φ2013 on guitar, John Vincent Usita Magalong Φ2013,  Dominic Leandro Fernandez Milla Φ2013 on guitar, Ryuichi Peralta Nakamura Φ2013 on drums, Jasper Paolo Ramos Viloria Φ2013 on vocals, along with sisses Mica Pimentel Φ2013 on vocals and Vea Santos Φ2013 on guitar. They mesmerized the crowd with hits such as The Ordertaker, First of Summer, Lucky, Idlip, and Mr. Brightside.

The main events of the night began with the presentations of the newest batch of sisses, AmpliPHI, as their party-themed audiovisual presentation displayed the fun-loving side of the batch, and their dance number endeared them to all who were present. Not long after, the newest batch of brods, the Eightieths played its introductory video, which elicited laughs from the audience. They then lit up the night with a medley of dances which made them leave the stage to a standing ovation from the crowd.

As the program neared its end, the crowd was treated to live performances of the popular local bands Itchyworms and Taken By Cars which made almost everyone rush towards the Bellagio Square stage to better enjoy the show.

In light of the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda in Central Visayas, the Fraternity and the Sorority allotted part of the proceeds of this event to the PHI Relief Operations. They were able to prepare 400 bags filled with relief goods which were then immediately sent to the typhoon-stricken areas.

This night would not have happened without Timothy Carl Francisco Uy Φ2012, and Vincent Elvin Tabamo Garduce Φ2012 as event heads. Truly, this was an event that will live long in the memory of all brods and sisses, and showed the world just how big PHI is – and how much more it can be.

Phi Class 2013

It’s official.

Last September 14, 2013 at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), fourteen Loyal Sons of the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity were among those who recited their Hippocratic Oaths to be part of the country’s newest batch of physicians.

The afternoon started with the board passers taking the seats at the front of the hall, while their proud parents sat at the back. The topnotchers of the recent board examinations, which includes Brod Abdelsimar “Buddy” Tan Omar II Φ2008B, were asked to occupy the table situated at the front of the stage.

The program began at around half past one o’ clock in the afternoon with a processional and an invocation, which was immediately followed by the singing of the Philippine national anthem and the PRC Hymn. After the opening remarks, the soon-to-be officially licensed physicians took the Oath of Professionals and Oath of Hippocrates with uncontainable pride and excitement.

The program proceeded with the awarding of Plaques of Recognition to the 8 top performing schools, starting from number 8 to number 1. The University of the Philippines – College of Medicine, being one of four schools bagging a 100% passing rate (149 passers out of 149 examiners), was awarded last. When the name of Dean Agnes Mejia was called to receive the award, loud cheering and a standing ovation welcomed her, soon followed by Brod John Faustine Danan Gutierrez Φ2008B, Class President of UPCM Class 2013, leading the class cheer with his familiar, resonating voice:

“Dos Mil Trese! Lahat Posible! What’s your bet? All in! 2013!”

The master of ceremonies next recognized the examinees who registered grades that were among the top 10 in this batch of board passers. The UP College of Medicine produced 5 topnotchers in the Top 10, headlined by the class valedictorian Dr. Daniel Guevara and Dr. Buddy Omar Φ2008B, both with a score of 88.75%, earning them the 2nd place among all examiners. Brod Buddy Omar went up the stage accompanied by his mother, Dr. Farrah Tan Omar, who herself is a PHI. They were met with the warm congratulations of Dr. Mejia as they descended the platform.

With a message by board first placer Dr. Ang and the closing remarks of Dr. De Ocampo, the program ended with the Philippines having 1,834 new licensed physicians.
