All for PHI!

Continuing the PHI tradition of service, the loyal sons of the Phi Kappa Mu together with the sisses of the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority traveled all the way to the beautiful island of Boracay for the annual Summer Medical Caravan. Last May 7-10, 2014 was a time not only for recreation but also for learning and reaching out to the different communities in Boracay and Aklan.

This is the sixteenth straight year that sis Dr. Cristina Alindogan Teotico Ching Φ ’92 has graciously hosted the Boracay surgical missions which were held at Barangays Yapac, Manocmanoc, and Motag in partnership with the Metropolitan Doctors Medical Clinic and Centro Escolar University Dental Alumni Association.

Almost 300 patients were given free surgical services by brods Ace Robert Bañas Alfabeto Φ ’09, Apolinario Estrellado Esquivel III Φ ’09, Joseff Karl Uy Fernandez Φ ’09, Richmond Paul Enriquez Goce Φ ’09, Jayson Cabalag Panganiban Φ ’09, Mark Joseph Mendoza Abaca Φ ’11, and Jose Jaime Lorenzo Claudio De Rivera Φ ’12 and sisses Karla Teresa Araneta Φ ’09, Ma. Corazon Cabanilla Φ ’09, Shayne Fajutagana Φ ’09, Janna Elyza Olivera Φ ’09, Julianne Francesca Reyes Φ ’09, Gienah Evangelista Φ ’12, Natasha Bernadine Abela Φ ’13, and Samantha Jiselle Siahetiong Φ ’13.

While the brods and sisses attended to patients in the morning, they all had the time to unwind and enjoy the island with each other during the evening. Surely the brods and sisses will never tire of giving free medical services to communities all over the Philippines for the summers to come. All for PHI!

In the morning of April 14, 2014, brods and sisses left Manila for their annual road trip to Pangasinan. Everyone arrived at the Villaflor Hospital in Dagupan at around noon to meet with brod Zenaides Tactay Wi Φ1972 before having lunch at Jech’s Bakeshop and Restaurant. Brod Jose Antonio Maximiano Regalado Escano Φ 1992 also attended the lunch.

After lunch, everyone took a trip to El Puerto Marina Resort in Lingayen to book rooms and enjoy each other’s company on the beach. Brods and sisses alike bonded over football and other games and stayed just long enough to watch the sun setting below the horizon.

Dinner was then served at Am-Am’s Steakhouse in Dagupan, where our alumni brods Zenaides Tactay Wi Φ1972, Generoso Deloso Torres Φ1972, and Jose Antonio Maximiano Regalado Escano Φ1992 shared various stories of their time as part of the resident body.

Once we all had our fill, we then went back to the beach to bond over a bonfire, drinking games, and various other stories to make this trip truly something to remember.

Three cheers to our gracious hosts, brods Zenaides Tactay Wi Φ1972, Generoso Deloso Torres Φ1972, Jose Antonio Maximiano Regalado Escano Φ1992, and Jayson Rosario Paragas Φ2008B!

CHEERS and good spirits filled the halls of the Pan Pacific Hotel’s Grand Ballroom as the crowd welcomed the newest members of the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity, along with the newly elected Executive Council members for 2014-2015 and the men of Phi Batch 1963, who celebrated their 50th anniversary in the brotherhood. The ceremony, entitled Rising Sons: The Phi Kappa Mu 2014 Induction Ball, was attended by members of the Fraternity from all over the world, young and old, with their lovely dates and guest sponsors. The ceremony also paid tribute to the graduating Interns and the outgoing Executive Council.

The event opened with a few words of wisdom and guidance from the outgoing Superior Exemplar, Jose Antonio Tan Paulino Φ2009. A bountiful feast was served to the guests as the batch video of the newest Brods, the Eightieths was played. The outgoing Brother Prior Jojiemar Salonga De Pano Φ2011 proudly introduced his “sons”— Lorenzo Abednego Bobadilla Adre Φ2013, Julian Que Arguilla Φ2013, Van Euldem Diaz Battad Φ2013, Jonathan Saputil Elevazo Φ2013, Gabriel Liberon Polido Jazon Φ2013, Kevin Sangel Lucas Φ2013, John Vincent Usita Magalong Φ2013, Mark Jason Dela Cruz Milan Φ2013, Dominic Leandro Fernandez Milla Φ2013, Al Joseph Rodriguez Molina Φ2013, Ryuichi Peralta Nakamura Φ2013, Jon Bryan Santiago Tiosin Φ2013, and Jasper Paolo Ramos Viloria Φ 2013 as they came up onstage. The program then turned into a solemn ceremony as the Eightieths were formally inducted into the Fraternity. The batch leader of the Eightieths, Brod Van, gave a heartwarming reply of gratitude and hope before the Brotherhood.

A video commemorating the shared experiences and achievements of the Phi Kappa Mu Batch 1963 was played for the returning Brods, Martin Jalon De la Rosa II Φ1963, Napoleon Medina Apolinario Φ1963 and Angelito Luna Sebollena Φ1963. Brod Marni and Nap, in reply to the tribute, elicited laughter among the crowd as they recounted their experiences as medical students during their time. The celebrants were awarded plaques of appreciation by the outgoing Venerable Preceptor Kim Paolo Lugtu Lorenzo Φ2010.

To congratulate the Graduating Batch of 2014, a commemorative video was played and medals were conferred to them by their Brothers Prior Leonard Christopher Tenorio Seńa Φ2007 and Dax Carlo Go Pascasio Φ2006. Brod Leonard and Dax both spoke on how the graduating interns were moulded from ordinary individuals into Phi brods living out the Fraternity’s virtues.

As the program drew to a close, overwhelming applause greeted the new Executive Council as they came up onstage and were formally sworn into office, alongside their outgoing counterparts. The new Superior Exemplar Mark Terence Pua Mujer Φ 2010 gave his closing remarks, and capped the night of with a momentous fraternity toast—celebrating the monumental achievements of the past year, and looking forward to the new year.

The Mariñas family will once again hold the annual Araw ni Inang Surgical, Medical, Dental, and Blood Donation Mission, on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Cristimar Village Basketball Court in Antipolo City from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon.

The Phi Kappa Mu, through Brod John Paul Emerson Serrato Mariñas, Φ2004B, will once again take part in this endeavour as part of the fraternity's line up of summer medical and surgical missions. All for PHI!
