Honor. Excellence. Heroism. These are the qualities that identify the various outstanding individuals for this year’s set of Gawad Chancellor Awardees. Hailing from every department and unit of UP Manila, the Gawad Chancellor Award is bestowed upon exceptional members of the UP Manila community in recognition for their exemplary accomplishments and contributions to both the University and the country.

In the awarding ceremony held last October 29, 2012 at the UPM Social Hall during the 1st day of the 2-day celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Health Sciences Center Autonomy and the 30th UP Manila Day, the various Gawad Chancellor Awards were conferred to the following categories: Outstanding Faculty, Outstanding Faculty in Extension Service, Outstanding Researcher, Outstanding REPS (Research, Extension, and Professional Staff), Outstanding Administrative Employee (Level 1), Outstanding Administrative Employee (Level 2), Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Athlete, Outstanding Student and Outstanding Student Organization.

Chosen from among the very diverse roster of student organizations based in the different colleges of the UP Health Sciences Center, the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity has been named once again as the Gawad Chancellor Awardee for the Most Outstanding Student Organization (MOSO) of UP Manila. The Phi Kappa Mu was also UP Manila’s MOSO in 2011. In the conferment speech delivered during the event, the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity was chosen “for being faithful to the fraternity’s ideals of service and brotherhood by spearheading humanitarian projects… and sustained implementation  of [various] service-oriented undertakings… for continuing to raise and nurture the members to become doctors and human beings with a heightened social consciousness who care and serve their fellowmen through varied community projects… and for giving pride and honor to the University and the health community by garnering awards for community service…”.

Guided by its four pillars of Excellence, Leadership, Service and Brotherhood, the Phi Kappa Mu is well known for pioneering life-changing and enduring service projects such as Empowerment Through Mobility, Operating Room Assistance (OPERA), Diamonds in the Rough, Camp Braveheart, Project RICE (Rehabilitation, Improvement, and Child Empowerment), and more that continues to help and empower our disadvantaged fellow countrymen.

The various Gawad Chancellor Awardees were chosen through the thorough deliberation of the various subcommittees on awards under the Overall Chair for the celebrations, Dean Agnes Mejia of the UP College of Medicine. The Subcommittee on Awards for 2012 Outstanding Student and Student Organization was headed by Dir. Honey Libertine Achanzar-Labor of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and composed of Prof. Andrea Martinez of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Prof. Madeleine Sumpaico of the College of Medicine (CM), Prof. Marohren Altura of the College of Public Health and Ms. Ferozza Delia Simbulan of the University Student Council (USC).
