He is the former Undersecretary of Health, the former vice president of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association, and the current Executive Vice President of the University of the Philippines. The man of the hour, he is Dr. Teodoro Javier Herbosa Φ1979. It was an honor and privilege to be able to talk to the man himself. Though his schedule was tight, he made sure that this interview pushed through, being the loyal son of the fraternity that he is. On the day of the interview, we took a drive to his office in the University of the Philippines Diliman. It was a drive we knew we would love, for it was the moment we would met the brod. Arriving at the venue, he gladly welcomed us himself saying, “‘Musta brods?”

It was one Monday afternoon along the busy streets of Makati when I decided to have a small talk with Brod Nol. It was back in highschool when I first saw him n Rated K. They did a feature on him, a medical student from UPCM who turned his small soap business into a well known massage spa. I waited for him in the conference room and was assisted by his accommodating staff. Typing on my laptop, I was preparing my questions when suddenly someone uttered “O brod, kumusta?” A gentleman in black-grey suit entered the room and asked me about my trip. “I just read my transes brod, cramming for an exam,” I replied. His hospitality always made me feel that we were not so different. It’s astounding to think that Maynoll Dominguez Montalbo Ф2002, the founder and CEO of Mont Albo Massage Hut, Ginhawa Spa and Dining and Mont Sapo, was my brod from Phi Kappa Mu.

“Broli rules: order lang kayo, kahit ano, basta mauubos niyo.” As platefuls of roasted lamb, greek cheese and other delightful morsels started arriving on our table in the quaint restaurant where we held our interview, I cannot help but wonder what makes a man of this magnitude: Is it hard work? Leadership? Diligence? Intelligence? In this brief encounter with Brod Enrico Paolo Chiong Banzuela ф2000, I realized that he already possesses all of those; what sets him apart from others is his capacity to inspire, and his insatiable desire to give back to those that helped him reach the top.

The original plan was to conduct a formal interview with Brod Arthur Dessi Estrada Roman Ф2000. But of course, once brothers come together, we couldn’t help but talk about all sort of things, to the point that we almost forgot that we were there for an interview. After the laughing and chatting, we went back to the order of the day. We talked about life in the Fraternity inside and outside medical school, his career and his newly elected position as President of the Philippine Hospital Infection Control Society.

Before the interview even started, one could not help but feel the familiarity and fondness as fellow brothers chatted about the going-ons in their lives. Brod Francisco Perfecto Flores Ф1981 reminisced how he was a Phi even before his first year of studying medicine, and how he was always being helped by his brods in several ways. He had always consulted his brods regarding major milestones, especially when he entered the field of Public Health, in which he garnered the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Reward for Excellence this year. He was the Programme Management Officer of the WHO Southeast Asia Regional Office (SEARO), and led the development of the Resource Mobilization Management System. Its adoption by the WHO Headquarters placed SEARO in the limelight in the Planning and Budget of WHO.
